Marble Popper games have much in common with match 3 games. In both cases a gamer has to build up lines and three-dimensional groups, which consist of no less than three counters of the same type. The only difference is that in match 3 games play fields are static and in Marble Popper games one has to have not only logic and special imagination but also... certain marksmanship to compose these groups.

In Marble Popper games the counters don't stand like motionless ones in their squares (like they do in match 3 games) but they move in chains or in three-dimensional accumulations, which actually consist of counters. One creates lines or groups cracking (from a special moving cannon) at chains or accumulations with the counters of the same kind. Both of them are moving, so there is always a probability... of a miss. A miss means that one wasted a shot and lost time, so the right formation (a line or a group) was not formed, and now there is one more counter at the play field.

The lines (or groups) created are destroyed automatically. If a chain comes to the end of its sinuous way (where one finds ominous jaws or a hole) or an accumulation reaches the bottom of the play field the gamer will be defeated. In this case one of his "lives" will be lost and the level will have to be started anew. To complete a level successfully one should create lines (or groups) until all the counters the developers of the game had for him are done with.

Free Marble Popper games usually have a constantly operating function of changing of the current color of a shot (type of the counters) for one or two spare variants – just in order to expand the gamer's facilities. Besides, some of the counters contain various bonuses. One has to include such counters in the lines (or groups) being created in order to activate the bonuses. The bonuses can for example blow up part of the counters in a line (or in an accumulation) or retard their motion for a while.

Modern realizations of Marble Popper games may have some essential differences as compared to their forefathers (such games as "Zuma" or "Luxor"). For example the location of a cannon and the mechanism of its movement may differ from the classic models or may change depending on the level of the game. Frankly speaking, the differences between some original realizations of Marble Popper games and match 3 games is so small, that sometimes there appear even certain differences with classification.
